Limewash is made from limestone fired in a kiln, slaked into a creamy putty, and tinted with natural mineral pigments. Romabio Classico Limewash is handcrafted in Italy from slaked lime sourced in the Dolomite Mountains and aged 12 months. Instead of forming a plastic film like latex paint, it soaks into masonry and calcifies — becoming part of the brick itself. Here’s why that matters:

How long does Romabio limewash last?
Classico Limewash never peels or chips — it slowly weathers into a natural patina over many years, and most homeowners love how it ages. Prefer it to stay exactly as applied? We can add Mineral Shield, or use Masonry Flat, which carries a 20-year manufacturer warranty.
Can limewash go over painted brick?
No — authentic limewash needs bare, absorbent masonry to calcify. If your brick is already painted, we use Romabio Masonry Flat, a breathable mineral paint made for previously painted surfaces. You still get the flat mineral look, plus the 20-year warranty.
Is limewash the same as whitewash or German schmear?
They’re related but different. Whitewash is often just watered-down paint, and German schmear is a mortar technique that permanently changes the brick. Romabio Classico Limewash is a true slaked-lime mineral coating — reversible in its first days, breathable for life, and available in whites, grays and warm beiges.
